Women's Participation in Local Governance
Ghanaians go to the polls on September 12, 2006 to elect members to the 138 district/municipa/metropolitan assemblies in the country. Analysis of the 2002 elections shows that the number of women elected into the assemblies constitute only over 7%. Yet, according to the United Nations, a threshold of 30% representation is needed for women's participation in decision-making to be meaningful. ABANTU is therefore asking: Will you vote for competent female candidates in the September 12, 2006 district level elections? If not, why not?
